Day 7 - Trials and tribulations of the Timber Trail

Although the alarm was set for 5 am, Linda and I found ourselves wide awake just before 4 am. We brewed a cup and went online to check our messages and the weather forecast. It revealed early morning showers, with conditions deteriorating throughout the day. Naturally, we were eager to set off and reach Camp Epic before the heavy rains and strong winds hit. Today's route was approximately 91 km, featuring a 1800m climb.

Wrapped snugly in Gore-Tex, we braved the elements, ready to face whatever challenges the weather gods threw our way. Did we emerge victorious? Keep reading to find out...

As we pedaled along, tracing the trail markers through Pureora Forest, the journey was a true pleasure. However, once we reached Arataki Trail, things got a little gnarly. The trail became a single track, washed out, muddy, and strewn with rocks. For 10 km, we battled through, averaging around 6 km/h, until we reached a gravel track, not quite a road, leading us towards the Timber Trail.

Before tackling the Timber Trail, we paused for a quick break and an early lunch. And when I say quick, I mean it, as the winds howled, the rain poured, and the temperatures dropped.

The Timber Trail, one of New Zealand's Great Rides, presented us with Maori statues, suspension bridges spanning over 100 m, and even a historic Stump House. The trail, particularly challenging in wet weather, led us through the misty forest, immersing us in nature's embrace. Initially, we counted the bridges, but soon shifted to tallying the number of falls we witnessed or experienced.

Reaching the geographic center of the North Island was a major highlight of the day. Although Simon and I had been there individually before, it was a special milestone to share with Linda and our friends. The sense of achievement and camaraderie at this landmark was truly special.

Finally arriving at our glamping spot, Camp Epic, the glamour was lacking, but Dean, the camp manager, greeted us warmly, and a hot shower awaited!

As we wrapped ourselves in warmth for the evening, we bonded over our shared experiences and minor injuries (sore knees, heads, thighs – you name it, we discussed it!).

Despite the challenges of Day 7, it was an incredible journey. Once again, we were grateful to Chef Vince for preparing a delicious Thai Chicken Curry for dinner in our open-air shelter.

I was also thankful that we were all still on track and hadn't driven one another entirely insane yet!

Until tomorrow,

Matt
